Mobile Safari Summary

This eight-night mobile camping safari runs as a loop from Maun, spending time in three main areas: the Mababe private concession, Moremi Game Reserve, and parts of the Okavango Delta. You'll move through different landscape types as the trip progresses—mopane woodland, permanent water channels, seasonal floodplains, and riverine forest sections that each support different wildlife species.

The customized safari vehicle has window seating for everyone, which helps during game drives that typically run twice daily in cooler morning and late afternoon hours. Since it's mobile camping, you're relocating to new sites every couple of nights rather than using a fixed base, with the crew handling all setup and meal preparation throughout.

Moremi covers both dry-land areas and permanent delta channels, creating habitat diversity that attracts elephant, buffalo, and predators like lion and leopard. The Mababe concession provides exclusive traversing areas with fewer vehicles than Moremi's public sections. Wildlife concentrations shift seasonally depending on water levels and prey movements across the different regions.

What happens on a normal safari day?

  • The day starts early because that’s when the animals are out. You’ll have coffee and a bite to eat around the fire before dawn, then head straight out for a game drive, walk, or boat trip depending on where you’re staying.
  • After a few hours tracking wildlife, your guide will pull over somewhere scenic for tea and biscuits. You’ll be back at camp by mid-morning with time to wash up at your basin before brunch—usually fresh bread, something warm from the kitchen, and cold salads.
  • The middle of the day is yours to sleep, read, take a proper shower, or just sit and absorb what you saw that morning. Late afternoon you’ll head out again for another drive or boat outing. In private areas outside the national parks, these can run past sunset with a spotlight to pick up leopards, genets, and other nocturnal animals that don’t show themselves during the day.
  • That’s the general rhythm, though your guide will adjust things based on what’s actually happening—where the elephants are moving, if there’s been a recent kill, weather changes, that sort of thing. No two days run exactly the same.

What happens when you move to another location?

  • Moving days start earlier than usual. You’ll pack up after a quick coffee, then drive to a scenic spot for a proper breakfast—maybe overlooking a floodplain or dried riverbed. From there, it’s game viewing while traveling toward your next camp, with stops for tea and biscuits along the way.
  • Lunch happens under whatever big trees your guide finds, usually acacia or sausage trees with decent shade. By that point you’re close enough to the new camp that the crew has already driven ahead and set everything up. You’ll arrive to find your tent standing exactly as it was that morning, just in a completely different landscape.
  • There’s time for a shower and afternoon tea before heading out to explore the new area—different waterholes, different vegetation, often completely different animals than what you were seeing the day before.
  • The timing on these travel days shifts around depending on distance, road conditions, and what wildlife shows up along the route. If there’s a pride of lions on a kill or a big elephant herd blocking the track, you might spend an extra hour there and compress something else. Your guide will read the situation and adjust accordingly. The drive times given are just the actual driving—they don’t account for the inevitable stops when something interesting crosses your path.

Daily Itinerary

Arrival

The safari starts at 14h30 on Day 1, a pre-night is not required

Day 1 - 3

The safari kicks off in Maun, where your guide will greet you at 14:30 at Maun Airport. From there, you’ll drive to Mababe. Your first night in Mababe will set the tone for what lies ahead. Arriving at camp just in time for sunset, you’ll immerse yourself in the beauty and sounds of this extraordinary wilderness area. Nestled between the southern section of Chobe National Park and the Khwai and Moremi wildlife regions, this environment offers a blend of diverse habitats. The river channel meanders through the savannah, drawing a variety of animals that come to drink during the dry season and relish the lush grasses that follow the rains. Acacia woodlands provide shade during the heat of the day, home to large herds of elephants, buffalo, and other wildlife.

Day 4 - 6

Your adventure will continue as we journey through the Moremi Game Reserve, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. A leisurely game drive will lead you to your private campsite, where you will settle in for the next three nights. In Moremi Game Reserve, land and water converge to create a stunning landscape of waterways, lagoons, pans, floodplains, riverine forests, and woodlands. This remarkable diversity of habitats offers spectacular opportunities for game viewing and birdwatching. Daily game drives will reveal nature’s best-kept secrets.

On the second day of your Moremi adventure, you will have the chance to explore the enchanting deep water channels of Moremi during a three-hour boat activity (subject to water levels and environmental conditions).

Day 7 - 8

Today, you will journey to the edge of the Okavango Delta by the Gomoti River, where you’ll meet local community polers with their mekoro (dugout canoes). As you glide silently along the river channels and floodplains, you’ll take in the stunning landscapes of this remarkable region, allowing you to venture deep into the Delta. Over the next two days, you’ll explore this breathtaking area through mokoro excursions and guided nature walks on the islands and floodplains of the Okavango.

Day 9

On your final day, you will depart from the outskirts of the Okavango Delta and head towards Maun. A game drive on your way out offers another opportunity to spot elusive wildlife that you may have missed. You will arrive in Maun around 12:00 PM, where your guide will drop you off at Maun Airport or your booked lodge.
