Okavango Delta

Wet Safaris

Set on the edge of the spectacular Xugana Lagoon in the Shinde concession, Xugana Island Lodge is one of the oldest camps in the Okavango Delta, having been around for decades. The lodge underwent a complete rebuild and reopened in April 2025 with a stunning fresh look, though it's managed to retain that classic Delta character that made it special in the first place. With just eight chalets accommodating sixteen guests maximum, this is an intimate property where you genuinely feel the tranquility of being deep in permanent water country. The location is widely considered one of the most beautiful permanent water sites in the entire Delta – a vast, lily-dotted lagoon framed by papyrus reeds and whispering waterways.

What makes Xugana special is its focus on the water experience rather than big game viewing. Activities revolve around motorboat safaris through the channels, peaceful mokoro excursions gliding through lily pads, guided walks on surrounding islands, and excellent fishing for bream and tiger fish. The bird-watching here is outstanding, with the permanent water attracting an incredible variety of species. You might spot rare red lechwe or the elusive sitatunga antelope, but this isn't a camp where you come to tick off the Big Five.

The main areas are tucked under a grand canopy of ebony and African mangosteen trees, with an open boma and al fresco dining overlooking the pristine lagoon. There's a unique overwater fire-deck that extends right onto the water – perfect for sundowners. The swimming pool sits within lush gardens at the heart of the island, offering a peaceful retreat between activities. The whole atmosphere is serene and unhurried, making it ideal for anyone wanting to slow down and truly absorb the Delta experience.

The Accommodation

Xugana recently underwent a complete rebuild and reopened in April 2025 with a fresh, contemporary look while maintaining the rustic charm the lodge has been known for over the years. The camp offers eight spacious chalets that accommodate a maximum of sixteen guests, making it genuinely intimate. These raised structures are built from traditional materials – reed walls, wooden floors, and thatched roofs – positioned along the shaded fringe of the island with direct views over the spectacular Xugana Lagoon. The design draws inspiration from the lagoon's natural blue hues and textures, creating a color palette that feels perfectly suited to this water-focused location.

Each chalet is elevated off the ground with large sliding glass doors that frame the lagoon views beautifully. The beds are positioned to face these doors, so you wake up to that expansive water vista every morning. What's particularly clever about the design is the enclosed viewing deck that extends from each room, creating this seamless indoor-outdoor experience where you can sit and watch the lagoon activity without fully committing to being outside. The en-suite bathrooms feature his and hers basins, flush toilets, and showers, while the interiors stay comfortably cool thanks to ceiling fans rather than air conditioning.

All the practical amenities are covered – tea and coffee-making facilities, charging points for devices, and plenty of storage space. One of the chalets is configured as a two-bedroom family unit for larger groups or families traveling together. The overall atmosphere is charmingly rustic yet comfortable, with those romantic touches like beds veiled in fine lace that give the rooms character without feeling overdone or theatrical.
