Dry Safaris

Selinda Camp sits on the banks of the Selinda Spillway in the massive 130,000-hectare private Selinda Reserve, positioned right between the Okavango Delta and Linyanti river systems. This is one of the most exclusive camps in Botswana with just three tented suites plus a separate two-bedroom villa called the Selinda Suite, making it incredibly intimate. The camp is owned by Great Plains Conservation and run by the legendary filmmakers Beverly and Dereck Joubert, and it's actually a Relais & Châteaux property, which gives you an idea of the level of luxury and service you can expect. The whole place has been designed with an old-world explorer feel but with seriously high-end finishes and attention to detail.

The main area is spread across a massive wooden deck with open-plan lounge and dining spaces, all overlooking the spillway and floodplains. There's a lovely pool tucked away in the trees, a spa offering treatments, and an art gallery showcasing Beverly Joubert's incredible wildlife photography. The design pays homage to different Botswana cultures and incorporates elements representing water, air, earth, and fire. It manages to feel both sophisticated and completely at home in the wilderness setting.

Game viewing here is exceptional, particularly during the dry season from June to November when enormous elephant herds congregate in the area. The reserve is famous for the Selinda pack of wild dogs and the Selinda lion pride that was featured in National Geographic documentaries. Activities include game drives with vehicles specially kitted out for photographers, seasonal boat trips on the spillway, guided walks, and catch-and-release fishing. The guiding is top-notch, which you'd expect from Great Plains.

The Accommodation

Selinda Camp is deliberately tiny with just three individual tented suites plus a separate two-bedroom villa, so exclusivity is basically guaranteed. Each suite is raised up on a spacious wooden deck made from repurposed materials and topped with a traditional thatch roof, which gives that classic safari aesthetic while keeping things cool inside. The tents are enormous and feel more like permanent structures than actual canvas accommodation, with hardwood floors covered in beautiful kilim rugs and antique-style furnishings that really nail that old-world explorer vibe.

Inside, you'll find a king-size bed positioned to face floor-to-ceiling mesh windows that frame incredible views of the spillway and floodplains. The bed is draped with mosquito netting and flanked by antique bedside tables with brass reading lamps. There's also a proper writing desk and vintage leather chairs if you want somewhere comfortable to sit and journal or just take in the scenery. What's particularly impressive is that despite the traditional aesthetic, each suite has air-conditioning – those solar-powered mini units that keep the temperature comfortable inside the mosquito net, which is a godsend during the hotter months.

The bathrooms are genuinely spectacular, with double doors leading to a spacious en-suite featuring a deep-soaking brass bathtub, double vanity basins, flush toilets, and indoor showers. Every suite has its own private veranda that extends out from the main living space, complete with a private plunge pool where you can cool off while watching wildlife. The whole setup manages to feel both luxurious and authentic, blending high-end comfort with that genuine bush experience perfectly.
