Botswana’s Salt Pans

Dry Safaris

San Camp sits at the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in Botswana's Kalahari Desert, and it's one of those places that feels almost otherworldly. Picture a handful of white canvas tents scattered under palm trees, surrounded by an endless expanse of shimmering salt flats that stretch to the horizon. The camp only operates during the dry season from April to October when the pans are actually accessible, and there's something special about knowing you can only visit for half the year. It's remote enough that you'll fly in on a small plane, and once you arrive, you really do feel like you've left the modern world behind.

What sets San Camp apart is the whole vibe – it's designed to feel like an old-fashioned expedition camp from the 1940s, complete with period furniture, paraffin lamps, and no electricity in the rooms. Everything runs on solar power, and while you won't have Wi-Fi or your usual creature comforts, that's kind of the point. The focus here isn't on big game viewing like you'd get in the Okavango. Instead, you're looking at desert-adapted species like gemsbok, springbok, and the incredibly entertaining meerkats that have become quite used to human visitors.

The activities are pretty unique too. You can take quad bikes out across the salt pans, spend time with local San Bushmen learning about their traditional way of life, or just lie out under what might be the most spectacular stargazing you'll ever experience. It's more about the space, the silence, and the surreal beauty of the desert landscape than anything else.

The Accommodation

San Camp takes you straight back to the golden age of safari with its collection of seven classic white canvas tents positioned right on the edge of the vast Ntwetwe Pan. Each tent sits under a cluster of desert palms, and the setup feels like something out of an old explorer's journal. The whole place runs on solar power, and at night they light everything with traditional paraffin lamps, which honestly adds to the whole romantic, off-grid atmosphere. There's no Wi-Fi or electricity in the rooms, so it's a proper digital detox situation.

Inside the tents, you'll find these gorgeous four-poster beds draped in crisp cotton sheets, sitting on Persian rugs that seem almost absurdly elegant for the middle of the Kalahari. The colonial-style furnishings include mahogany writing desks and leather armchairs, along with antique touches like copper water jugs and basins. Despite the vintage aesthetic, the bathrooms are surprisingly modern with proper flush toilets and solar-heated showers, so you're not exactly roughing it. Each tent has its own en-suite setup, which is a relief given how remote the location is.

The real star feature is probably the private veranda area outside each tent, complete with a daybed where you can stretch out and take in those utterly surreal views of the salt pans stretching endlessly in every direction. It's that kind of place where you can actually see the curvature of the earth, and the silence is almost eerie. The rooms strike this interesting balance between adventure and comfort – definitely luxurious, but in a understated, authentic way.
