Moremi Game Reserve

Mixed Safaris

Okuti sits right in the heart of Moremi Game Reserve at the Xakanaxa Lagoon, one of the most wildlife-rich areas in the entire Okavango Delta. It's run by Ker & Downey Botswana and offers what many consider to be one of the best value safari experiences in the region without compromising on quality or comfort. The location along the Maunachira channel means you're constantly surrounded by birdlife, with herons and storks particularly abundant during breeding season, and the permanent water attracts consistent wildlife year-round. Moremi is known for its reliable game viewing, so whether you're a first-timer or a repeat visitor, you're pretty much guaranteed good sightings.

What really sets Okuti apart is its unique architecture. The accommodations are called "Masasas" – an ancient tribal word for houses made of reeds – and they're genuinely different from anything else you'll find in Botswana's camps. There are five double or twin units plus two family options that have two bedrooms sharing bathroom facilities, making it properly family-friendly. Each room has these dramatic high curved ceilings covered in dry reeds, wooden floors, and private decks that overlook the waterways. The design has this tunnel-like effect that's both striking and surprisingly comfortable. Everything's connected by raised wooden walkways that stretch over flooded areas, and the whole camp is wheelchair accessible.

Game drives here follow Ker & Downey's signature approach of maximum four guests per vehicle with guaranteed window seats and camera mounts – ideal for photography enthusiasts. You can also explore the delta's channels and lagoons by motorboat, which gives you a completely different perspective on the wildlife and birdlife. The camp recently underwent refurbishment, so everything feels fresh and modern while maintaining that authentic safari character.

The Accommodation

The rooms at Okuti are unlike anything else you'll find in Botswana's safari camps. They're called "Masasas," which is an ancient tribal word for houses built from reeds, and the design really lives up to that name. Each room features these dramatically high curved ceilings that are completely covered in dry reeds, creating this almost tunnel-like effect that's both visually striking and surprisingly practical for keeping things cool. There are five standard double or twin units, plus two family Masasas that have two bedrooms sharing spacious bathroom facilities – perfect for families or groups traveling together. The lodge accepts children from age seven, so it's genuinely family-friendly rather than just tolerating kids.

Every room sits right on the edge of the Maunachira channel with private decks that give you front-row seats to the constant parade of wildlife and birdlife. The interiors feature wooden floors, thoughtfully designed seating, and large comfortable beds, with the occasional cowhide rug adding to that authentic safari aesthetic. The en-suite bathrooms come with both indoor and outdoor showers, so you can choose between conventional comfort or showering under the African sky with lagoon views. It's a nice touch that elevates the whole experience.

One practical feature worth mentioning is that all the rooms are connected by raised wooden walkways, which makes the entire camp wheelchair accessible – something you don't often find in remote bush camps. The recent refurbishment has brought in modern furnishings and improved the layout to maximize those spectacular views over the lagoon and river. Despite the unique architecture, everything feels solid and comfortable rather than gimmicky.
