Okavango Delta

Mixed Safaris

Okavango Explorers Camp is part of Great Plains Conservation's Explorer Collection and sits in the southwestern section of Botswana's massive Selinda Reserve. What makes the location particularly special is that it's positioned right at the intersection where the upper Okavango Delta water system meets the famous Selinda Spillway – essentially a convergence point of two iconic ecosystems. The reserve itself spans around 130,000 hectares and has become legendary for its predator populations and enormous elephant concentrations. This specific spot was handpicked for its access to some of the highest wildlife densities in the entire region, and it really delivers on that promise.

The camp embraces a classic 1920s explorer aesthetic while keeping things relatively small and intimate with just six tented accommodations. It's designed to recreate that golden age of African adventure without sacrificing modern comfort or luxury. The communal areas include a lounge, dining tent, and the inevitable campfire where everyone gathers under the African sky to swap stories from the day's sightings. The whole setup encourages that authentic explorer feeling – you're genuinely out in the wilderness here, not just visiting it from a distance.

Wildlife viewing is exceptional across the board. Lions, leopards, and wild dogs are regularly spotted hunting through the area, while giraffe and buffalo are common sightings. The reserve also supports populations of rarer antelope species like roan, sable, and eland. But the real spectacle happens during the peak dry season in late September when over 9,000 elephants concentrate along the Selinda river system. Activities include morning and evening game drives, night drives for nocturnal species, walking safaris, and mokoro trips when water levels permit.

The Accommodation

Okavango Explorers Camp has just six tented rooms in total, which keeps things genuinely intimate and exclusive. The tents are designed to evoke that classic 1920s explorer aesthetic while incorporating all the modern comforts you'd expect from a high-end safari camp. They're spacious and well-appointed, striking that balance between authentic safari atmosphere and contemporary luxury. Each tent sits under the shade of large trees with views out over the surrounding landscape, positioning you right in the heart of the action while maintaining privacy from the other guests.

The interiors lean into that early explorer theme with rich materials and thoughtful details that make you feel like you've stepped back into Africa's golden age of safari, but without sacrificing any comfort. The tents are properly large – not cramped at all – with comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and all the essential amenities you need. There's something special about staying in canvas when you're in a place as wildlife-rich as the Selinda Reserve; you're constantly aware of the sounds and movements of animals around you, which adds to the sense of immersion in the wilderness.

The camp's location in the southwest section of the Selinda Reserve means you're positioned at this unique intersection where the Okavango Delta water system meets the Selinda Spillway. From your tent, you're literally surrounded by some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the region – elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, and rare antelope species all move through regularly. The setup encourages you to slow down and really experience the environment, whether you're relaxing on your private deck or gathering in the communal areas to share stories around the campfire.
