Moremi Game Reserve

Dry Safaris

Nestled in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Mombo is one of those places that feels almost too good to be true. Located on Mombo Island in the northern section of the Moremi Game Reserve, this area has earned its reputation as one of Africa's most spectacular wildlife destinations. The landscape here is something special – a mix of open floodplains, winding waterways, and scattered islands that create the perfect environment for some of the continent's most impressive animal sightings.

What really sets Mombo apart is the sheer concentration of wildlife you'll find here. Big cats are practically celebrities in this corner of Botswana, with lions, leopards, and cheetahs all calling the area home. You're also likely to spot elephants, buffalo, wild dogs, and countless antelope species going about their daily routines. The birdlife is equally impressive, with over 400 species recorded in the region. Game drives here tend to deliver the kind of experiences that safari dreams are made of, and the guides know the area intimately.

The Mombo Camp itself sits on one of the most prime pieces of real estate in the entire delta. It's been rebuilt and reimagined over the years, but the focus has always remained the same – putting guests right in the middle of the action while keeping things luxurious and comfortable. Whether you're watching a pride of lions from your deck or heading out on an early morning drive, there's this constant sense that you're experiencing Africa at its absolute finest.

The Accommodation

The accommodations at Mombo Camp are honestly pretty incredible. You're staying in what they call "tents," but these are nothing like camping – think more along the lines of a luxury apartment with canvas walls. Each of the nine spacious suites sits elevated on wooden walkways tucked beneath massive fig and ebony trees, giving you this amazing tree-house vibe while keeping you safely above any wandering wildlife below. The positioning is brilliant because you get sweeping views over the floodplains where animals gather throughout the day.

Inside, the layout feels really well thought out. There's a proper sitting area where you can relax with a drink, a separate bedroom with an enormous bed, and a bathroom that's almost as big as the sleeping space. What makes it special is having both an indoor shower and an outdoor one – there's something pretty magical about showering under the African sky while watching elephants stroll past in the distance. They've also installed these clever air conditioning systems that work within the mosquito netting, which is a lifesaver during the hotter months.

The private deck wrapping around each tent might be the best feature, though. You've got comfortable daybeds and seating areas where you can just sit for hours watching the incredible parade of wildlife on the plains below. Some guests have even spotted lion hunts happening right from their veranda. It's the kind of setup where you almost don't want to leave your room, except the game drives are too good to miss.
