Mababe

Dry Safaris

Mokete is one of those camps that feels like it shouldn't exist – tucked into the remote Mababe Depression between the Okavango Delta and Chobe, in an area that was closed to tourism for years. The name means "feast" in Sesotho, which is pretty fitting when you see the sheer amount of wildlife that congregates here. This place is all about the grasslands and seasonal wetlands that act like a magnet for animals during the dry season. We're talking massive buffalo herds – some numbering in the thousands – along with the lion prides that shadow them. The landscape shifts between open plains that remind you of the Serengeti, mopane woodlands where leopards lurk, and marshy areas filled with hippos and crocs.

What makes Mokete unique is how new and intentionally designed it is. Wilderness Safaris built this as a limited-time camp with sustainability at its core – completely off-grid and powered by solar. The architecture is striking without being showy, with those clever retractable roofs that let you sleep under the stars. It's intimate too, with only nine tents for eighteen guests, which means you're not jostling with crowds on game drives. The wildlife viewing is genuinely exceptional – you might see rare pangolins, wild dogs, or those distinctive white warthogs that are unique to the area.

Access is part of the adventure, usually by helicopter from Maun, which gives you this dramatic arrival over the plains. The camp encourages flexibility with activities – stay out as long as you want on drives, have bush picnics, or spend time in the sunken hide watching the parade of animals coming to drink. It's raw, wild, and honestly unforgettable.

The Accommodation

The nine tents at Mokete are something special, blending minimalist design with thoughtful luxury in a way that feels fresh and modern. Each canvas suite sits elevated on a platform connected by wooden walkways, giving you this sense of floating above the wilderness. What really sets these rooms apart is the retractable roof over the bedroom – you can literally slide it open and fall asleep under the stars, which is honestly one of those experiences that sounds gimmicky until you actually do it. Then it becomes the highlight of your stay. The tents are spacious too, with a separate lounge area where you can relax during the heat of the day, and inverter air conditioning that makes the midday temperature bearable.

Each room comes with its own private plunge pool on the deck, which becomes your personal front-row seat to the wildlife drama unfolding below. The ensuite bathrooms are beautifully designed with both indoor and outdoor shower options, and the double vanities mean you're not fighting for sink space in the morning. The interiors stick to clean earth tones and minimal decoration, letting the view do the talking. There's decent Wi-Fi too, which is surprisingly good for somewhere this remote, though most guests find themselves ignoring their devices pretty quickly.

What makes these accommodations work so well is how they balance comfort with that authentic bush feeling. You're not cut off from nature by thick walls – just canvas and clever design. Animals wander through camp regularly, and hearing elephants or lions nearby at night while you're safe in your tent is thrilling in the best possible way. It's luxury that doesn't try too hard, and that's exactly what makes it work.
