Little Machaba represents the intimate sister property to Machaba Camp, situated on the same picturesque island in the renowned Khwai Community Concession adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve. With just four luxury tented suites—two designed for couples and two configured for families—the camp accommodates a maximum of eight guests, creating an exceptionally exclusive and personalized safari experience. The setting is idyllic, nestled among towering riverine trees with walkways winding through the forest and stunning views across the Khwai River floodplains where wildlife congregates throughout the day. Named after the Setswana word for sycamore fig tree, the camp embraces a classic 1950s safari aesthetic that harks back to the golden age of African exploration while incorporating all the modern comforts today's travelers expect.

The Khwai Concession is justifiably famous as one of Botswana's most productive wildlife areas, offering year-round game viewing that rivals anywhere in the country. The varied landscape encompasses savannah, woodland, and seasonal waterways, creating diverse habitats that support healthy populations of elephant and buffalo, alongside thriving predator numbers including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and the highly coveted African wild dog. Being positioned right on the floodplain means animals are constantly moving through and around the camp—guests often spot hippos and elephants from their tent decks, and the sounds of the bush at night are wonderfully immediate with only canvas between you and the wilderness.

Activities focus primarily on morning and afternoon game drives in open vehicles, with the private concession allowing off-road tracking and exciting night drives. When water levels permit, peaceful mokoro canoe excursions offer a different perspective on the Delta's waterways, and guided walking safaris provide intimate encounters with the smaller details of the bush. The camp also features a small swimming pool, offers in-room spa treatments, and surprisingly provides WiFi access in the rooms—a rarity in such remote locations.

The Accommodation

Little Machaba features just four luxury tented suites built on raised wooden decks that wind through tall riverine trees overlooking the Khwai River floodplains. Two of these tents are designed specifically for couples seeking intimacy, while the other two accommodate families, making the camp ideal for small groups of friends or multi-generational travelers. The design embraces a grand yesteryear aesthetic inspired by classic 1950s safari style, with canvas construction that keeps you genuinely connected to the sounds and scents of the African bush. Each tent is accessed through a zip-up canvas door with mesh screening, opening into spacious interiors that balance authentic safari charm with modern comfort.

Inside, the tents feature either double or twin-bed configurations with quality mattresses and premium linens, complemented by bedside tables with reading lights, a writing desk, and an armchair for relaxing. Practical amenities include standing fans to keep things cool, tea and coffee stations, coat and hat stands, and simple canvas storage units. The en-suite bathrooms at the rear of each tent are well-appointed with flush toilets, twin washbasins with hanging mirrors, and indoor showers with hot and cold running water. What sets Little Machaba apart is that every tent includes an outdoor bathtub on a secluded deck, while three tents also feature outdoor showers—perfect for bathing under the stars while hippos grunt from the river below.

The two family tents are connected via a shared lounge area with roll-down canvas walls that can be adjusted for privacy when needed. A private patio deck at the front of each tent provides the perfect spot for watching wildlife unfold along the floodplain, with elephants and other animals regularly passing by. Limited WiFi is available in the rooms only, and spa treatments can be arranged in the privacy of your suite, adding to that sense of pampered seclusion in the heart of the wilderness.
