Okavango Delta

Mixed Safaris

Kanana Camp is a lovely mid-range option in the Okavango Delta that offers excellent value without compromising on the authentic safari experience. Located in the Xudum concession in the south-eastern part of the Delta, it sits in an area blessed with diverse habitats including seasonal floodplains, woodlands, and permanent waterways. The camp has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that appeals to families, first-time safari goers, and anyone looking for a genuine Delta experience without the hefty price tag of some of the ultra-luxury lodges. There's something refreshingly unpretentious about Kanana—it focuses on what really matters, which is getting you out into this incredible wilderness and helping you connect with it.

The wildlife viewing around Kanana is really impressive, with good populations of elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, and a wide variety of antelope species. The seasonal flooding means the activities change throughout the year, so you might be doing game drives during the dry months and then switching to mokoro excursions and boat trips when the waters rise. The guides are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, genuinely passionate about sharing their understanding of the Delta's ecology and wildlife. The birdlife is fantastic year-round, making it a great spot for birders as well as those focused on mammals.

What makes Kanana work so well is its honest approach to safari. The accommodation is comfortable rather than lavish, the food is good and plentiful, and the overall vibe is warm and friendly. It's particularly well-suited to families with the option of family tents, and the staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. You leave feeling like you've had a proper Delta adventure without breaking the bank.

The Accommodation

The rooms at Kanana are comfortable and functional, offering everything you need for a good safari experience without unnecessary extras. Each tent is raised on a wooden platform and has a classic safari feel with canvas walls that let you hear the sounds of the Delta throughout the night. Inside, you'll find twin or double beds with mosquito netting, simple but sturdy furniture, and enough space to unpack and settle in properly. The decor is straightforward and unpretentious—this isn't about designer touches or Instagram-worthy interiors, but rather creating a clean, comfortable base where you can rest between activities and feel connected to the bush around you.

The en-suite bathrooms have hot showers and flush toilets, which work reliably and provide all the essentials you need. There's also an outdoor shower at each tent, which is always a treat when you can rinse off under the open sky after a dusty game drive. Each tent has its own small veranda with a couple of chairs where you can sit with a cup of tea or a cold drink and watch the day unfold. The views over the surrounding landscape are lovely, and it's nice having that bit of private outdoor space even if it's not as elaborate as what you'd find at pricier camps.

The family tents are particularly practical, with separate sleeping areas that give parents and kids a bit of space from each other. Everything is well-maintained and clean, and while the rooms won't win any luxury awards, they're genuinely comfortable and fit perfectly with Kanana's honest, no-nonsense approach to safari. You're here for the wildlife and the Delta experience, and the accommodation supports that without trying to be something it's not.
