Spectacular waterways and a picture postcard camp of the Delta

Jacana Camp is a water-based safari lodge situated deep in the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta, accessible only by boat or light aircraft. It's one of those classic Delta camps where everything revolves around the water, with wooden walkways connecting the main areas and chalets all built on stilts above the channels and lagoons. The setting is absolutely magical, surrounded by papyrus reeds, lily-covered waterways, and islands dotted with palm trees. Because it's in the permanent delta, the focus here is very much on water activities and birding rather than traditional big game viewing, which gives it a completely different feel from the land-based camps.

The camp itself has a wonderfully relaxed and intimate atmosphere, with just a handful of chalets keeping things small and personal. The main areas are raised platforms where you can enjoy meals overlooking the water, spot hippos wallowing in the channels, or simply relax with a book while listening to the incredible sounds of the wetland. Activities center around mokoro excursions—gliding silently through the channels in traditional dugout canoes—along with motorboat trips, fishing, and guided walks on the nearby islands. The birdlife is phenomenal, with hundreds of species to spot, and you'll often see elephants and other wildlife on the islands or crossing between them.

What makes Jacana special is its authentic Delta experience. This isn't about ticking off the Big Five; it's about immersing yourself in this unique ecosystem and appreciating its subtle beauty and incredible diversity. The guides are passionate about the waterways and really help you understand this complex environment. It's perfect for people who want something a bit different from the typical safari, offering tranquility, natural beauty, and a genuine sense of being part of the Delta rather than just visiting it

The Accommodation

The rooms at Jacana Camp are built right over the water on raised wooden platforms, which gives you this incredible feeling of floating in the middle of the Delta. Each of the chalets is spacious and airy, with large windows and sliding doors that open onto your private deck, so you're constantly connected to the water and wildlife around you. The sound of the reeds rustling and birds calling becomes your natural soundtrack, and you might even spot hippos or lechwe from your room. The interiors are tastefully done with natural materials and earth tones that complement the wetland setting, creating a space that feels both comfortable and authentically African.

The en-suite bathrooms are well-designed with indoor and outdoor showers, which is such a treat when you can shower under the open sky surrounded by papyrus and palm trees. There are proper flush toilets and twin basins, plus all the little touches that make you feel looked after without being overly fancy. The beds are comfortable with good mosquito netting, which is important given the watery location, and there's adequate storage for your belongings. What really makes these rooms special is the private deck—it's spacious enough for lounging chairs and a small table, and you'll find yourself spending hours out there just watching the Delta go by.

The elevated position means you get lovely breezes that keep things cool, and the design maximizes privacy while still giving you those stunning water views. Everything feels intimate and peaceful, like you have your own little sanctuary in the middle of this vast wetland. The rooms aren't trying to be flashy or over-the-top luxurious; they're just really well-conceived spaces that let you relax completely while being surrounded by one of Africa's most beautiful environments.
