Okavango Delta

Dry Safaris

Duba Explorers Camp occupies a truly privileged position in the northeastern corner of the private Duba concession, a vast 77,000-acre reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Built on a wooded island under a canopy of mature jackalberry, leadwood, and mangosteen trees, the camp is accessed via an elaborate series of bridges that cross surrounding waterways – immediately setting the tone for adventure. What makes this location extraordinary is that it's the only camp in the entire concession, meaning guests enjoy completely private wildlife encounters in an area famous for its dramatic lion and buffalo interactions. The camp was created by renowned wildlife filmmakers and conservationists Dereck and Beverly Joubert, who built it in partnership with local communities to ensure mutual benefits.

With just five expedition-style tents accommodating a maximum of ten guests, Duba Explorers feels wonderfully intimate and exclusive. The camp's design deliberately echoes the romance of 1920s exploration, with vintage touches throughout, yet delivers all the modern comforts you'd expect from a luxury property. The main area sits under sweeping canvas on raised decking, featuring open-concept dining and lounge spaces, an expansive deck perfect for sundowners, and a copper fire pit where guests gather in the evenings to share stories under impossibly star-filled skies. There's even a quirky swimming pool mounted on the back of an old military vehicle.

Activities showcase both the wet and dry aspects of the Delta, depending on water levels. Morning and afternoon game drives in specially adapted vehicles with higher suspension explore the surrounding floodplains and woodlands, offering exceptional wildlife viewing including the area's famous predators – lions, leopards, and wild dogs. When water levels permit, guests can enjoy motorboat excursions and traditional mokoro canoe trips through the channels, as well as guided bush walks. The guiding here is exceptional, with well-trained staff genuinely excited to share their knowledge and ensure unforgettable wildlife encounters in this pristine wilderness.

The Accommodation

The accommodation at Duba Explorers Camp beautifully captures the romance of old-world exploration while providing thoroughly modern comfort. With just five expedition-style canvas tents, the camp maintains an incredibly intimate feel – you're genuinely the only guests in this vast 77,000-acre private concession. Each tent sits on raised wooden decking, positioned under mature trees with spectacular views across the Okavango floodplains. The design is utterly charming, featuring vintage touches like antique explorer trunks, flatweave kilim rugs, gauzy mosquito nets draped over comfortable double beds, and classic campaign writing desks that transport you back to the golden age of safari.

The interiors are spacious and thoughtfully appointed, with bedside tables and reading lights, standing fans, and plenty of storage space. En-suite bathrooms come with double vanity basins, flush toilets, and indoor showers with both hot and cold running water. One particularly clever feature is the solar-powered mini air-conditioning units that work within the mosquito net area – an absolute blessing during the hotter months. The camp even provides each tent with high-quality binoculars for your exclusive use throughout your stay, which is a lovely touch.

Outside, your private veranda is furnished with foldable safari chairs, a drinks table, and a day sofa – the perfect sanctuary for morning coffee or afternoon siestas while watching elephants or kudu wander past. The deck is lit by lanterns in the evenings, adding to that authentic explorer atmosphere. It's the kind of accommodation where you feel genuinely immersed in the wilderness, yet never sacrifice comfort or style.
