Vic Falls

Mixed Safaris

Sitting on the Zambezi River some 21 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls, Chundu Island offers something genuinely different from the town-based lodges that dominate the Victoria Falls accommodation market. The island setting creates an immediate sense of remove — guests arrive by boat, and the Zambezi National Park stretches along the opposite bank, keeping the wildlife close and the outside world at a comfortable distance.

The lodge itself is built around the island's mature trees, with ilala palm-thatched roofing, wooden decking and canvas walls giving it a relaxed, riverine character that feels appropriate to the setting rather than imposed upon it. Eight river suites look out directly over the water, and as the dry season advances, a wide sandy beach emerges on the upstream end of the island, becoming something of an unofficial focal point for sundowners and quiet afternoons. Solar power runs the entire property, which sits well with the surroundings.

The Accommodation

Chundu Island has eight river suites in total — six standard and two family configurations — each positioned to make the most of the Zambezi frontage. Private decks extend from every suite, putting guests directly above the riverbank with uninterrupted views across the water toward the Zimbabwean and Zambian shorelines.

The interiors keep things unfussy: canvas walls, wooden finishes and ceiling fans in place of air conditioning, a deliberate choice that keeps the lodge in step with its solar-powered, low-impact ethos.

The family suites offer a bit more flexibility, accommodating a roll-away for younger guests when needed. It's accommodation that prioritises the view and the setting over elaborate interior design, which given what's outside the window, feels like entirely the right call.
