Dry Safaris

Chobe Under Canvas offers something genuinely different in the safari world – it's a mobile tented camp that moves locations every five or six days within Chobe National Park. This semi-permanent setup means you're constantly exploring new areas and discovering different wildlife hotspots, all while staying in the same comfortable camp that simply packs up and relocates.

With just five spacious tents accommodating a maximum of ten guests, the experience is wonderfully intimate and exclusive. This is proper bush camping, but not as you might imagine it. Each Meru-style tent features a comfortable double or twin bed with crisp linens, an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet, and the classic touch that guests absolutely love – a bucket shower where hot water is delivered on request. There's also a private veranda at the front of each tent where you can sit with a sundowner and watch the bush come alive.

The camp itself is delightfully rustic without sacrificing comfort. Meals are prepared over open fires and served in an open-sided communal mess tent, where everyone gathers to share safari stories around the dining table. The food is surprisingly excellent – hearty Pan-African cuisine that rivals far more formal establishments. There's a well-stocked bar, a small library, and even a private butler on hand to assist with requests.

What makes this camp truly special is just how close you are to the wildlife. Well-worn animal paths meander right through the campsite down to the water's edge, and it's not uncommon to have elephants wandering past your tent. Activities include morning and afternoon game drives, boat cruises on the Chobe River, and even specialized photographic safaris aboard the custom-built Pangolin boat. It's authentic wilderness immersion with creature comforts thoughtfully woven in.

The Accommodation

The accommodation at Chobe Under Canvas really embodies what mobile camping should be – authentically rustic yet surprisingly comfortable. With just five tents in total, the camp feels incredibly intimate, hosting a maximum of ten guests at any time. Each tent is Meru-style, which means there's a double layer of canvas creating a lovely covered veranda at the front where you can sit and soak in the surroundings.
Step inside and you'll find either a double bed or twin beds made up with proper comfortable mattresses and crisp linens – none of that thin camping mat business here. There are bedside tables for your rechargeable lanterns, a storage trunk for your belongings, and a few safari chairs on the veranda with a small table. It's simple but thoughtfully done.

The real charm lies in the en-suite facilities. Behind a canvas partition at the back of the tent, you'll find a separate flush toilet, a tin basin with a water jug, a shaving mirror, and the piece de resistance – a classic bucket shower. Hot water is provided on request, and there's something wonderfully nostalgic about showering this way in the African bush. Complimentary soaps and fresh towels are supplied, naturally.
What you won't find are electrical outlets, WiFi, or modern distractions. The tents have no electricity, though there are charging points in the safari vehicles if you need them. It's all about disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with nature. The tents are positioned close to well-worn animal paths leading down to the water, which means you genuinely feel like you're part of the wilderness rather than just observing it from afar. It's camping elevated to an art form.
