Chief's Camp sits on Chief's Island in the heart of Moremi Game Reserve, right in the thick of what's known as the "predator capital of Africa" – and that nickname isn't an exaggeration. This is one of only two lodges allowed on the island, and the location is absolutely prime for game viewing. You're in the exclusive Mombo Concession where wildlife is ridiculously abundant year-round.
The camp was completely renovated and reopened in 2016, and they've done a stunning job balancing luxury with authenticity. Everything's built into the existing landscape under a gorgeous canopy of mature jackalberry, sausage, and rain trees. The main area is split-level with the upper deck housing the dining room, bar, curio shop, library, and reception – all with expansive views over the northern floodplains. Down below there's a beautiful swimming pool where you can cool off while watching elephants and buffalo wander past.
They've also added some brilliant touches like a pizza deck with a proper pizza oven, an orientation room where you learn about the delta before heading out, a gym, and a kids' playroom, making it surprisingly family-friendly for such a luxury property. There's even a holistic spa treatment room offering massages with premium products.
What sets Chief's apart is that it's the only place in Botswana where you can see rhinos in their natural environment within the delta. Game drives happen in open Land Cruisers with professional guides who really know their stuff, and when water levels are high between April and September, you can explore the waterways by mokoro. The seasonal floodwaters transform the area dramatically, so every visit offers something different. The wildlife viewing here is consistently exceptional – Big Five sightings are common, and the predator action is genuinely thrilling.
