Moremi Game Reserve

Mixed Safaris

Camp Xakanaxa is one of those places that's been around forever, and there's a reason people keep coming back. Perched on the banks of the Khwai River overlooking the Xakanaxa Lagoon in the heart of Moremi Game Reserve, it's got one of the finest locations in the entire Okavango Delta – and being on a permanent channel means they can offer both water and land activities year-round, which is relatively rare.

The camp accommodates twenty-four guests across twelve spacious Meru-style canvas tents, plus there's a family tent with two bedrooms for those traveling with kids. Each tent sits on a raised wooden platform right at the water's edge, with private viewing decks complete with sun loungers. The en-suite bathrooms are simple but perfectly functional with showers, basins, and toilets. During the heat of the day, there's a water sprinkler system to help keep things cool inside.

What really gives Xakanaxa its character is the authentic old-school safari atmosphere. The main buildings – constructed from local timber, reed, and thatch – stretch out over the river on raised platforms, maximizing those gorgeous lagoon views. There's an elegant lounge with a small library, dining room, expansive sundeck, and one of the largest plunge pools in the delta. A cosy fire pit sits under giant jackalberry trees, perfect for sundowners.

At night, everything's lit by paraffin lamps, candles, and battery-powered lights rather than electric bulbs, which creates this wonderfully atmospheric, traditional African ambience. The camp even has an open bar where you can help yourself – it's that kind of relaxed, welcoming place. No wonder it's remained an Okavango favourite for so many years.

The Accommodation

The rooms at Camp Xakanaxa are proper safari tents in the truest sense – all canvas, raised on wooden platforms, and positioned right at the water's edge where you can hear hippos snorting throughout the night. There's something wonderfully authentic about having only canvas between you and the wildlife, and that's exactly what you get here.

The camp has twelve spacious Meru-style tents that can accommodate up to twenty-four guests, including one family tent with two bedrooms that's perfect for parents and kids who want their own space while staying connected. Each tent sits on its own raised deck along the fringe of the lagoon, giving you a real sense of privacy and your own little slice of the delta.

Inside, the tents are comfortable without being overly fancy. You'll find twin beds that can be configured as doubles, en-suite bathrooms with showers, hand basins, and toilets – all the essentials done well. The wooden furnishings give that classic rustic safari feel, and there's a water sprinkler system on the roof that helps keep things cool during the midday heat, which is genuinely appreciated when temperatures soar.

What makes these rooms special is the private viewing deck out front, complete with comfortable sun loungers. This becomes your outdoor living room – perfect for morning coffee, afternoon siestas, or simply watching elephants wander past while you read a book. The views across the Xakanaxa Lagoon are spectacular, and being this close to the water means you're constantly surrounded by wildlife activity.

It's authentic, unpretentious accommodation that puts you right in the heart of the action without sacrificing comfort.
