Dry Safaris

Linyanti Expeditions Camp represents a refreshing return to authentic expedition-style safari living, operating seasonally from May to October when wildlife concentrations along the Linyanti River reach their peak. Set within a private concession in the Chobe Enclave bordering Chobe National Park, this intimate six-tent camp sits on the southern banks of the Linyanti marsh beneath the cooling shade of riverine trees. Unlike its more luxurious sister property Linyanti Bush Camp located nearby, Expeditions deliberately embraces a stripped-back approach that recalls the golden age of African exploration. The focus here is squarely on the wilderness experience rather than five-star amenities, with a light environmental footprint and rustic charm that appeals to adventurous travelers seeking genuine bush immersion over polished luxury.

The camp's design centers around two canvas-covered communal areas—one housing the dining space with an exposed kitchen where guests can watch meals being prepared, and another serving as a relaxed lounge and bar area. A large firepit anchors the social heart of camp, where guests gather after game drives to share stories under the stars. The atmosphere is deliberately communal and casual, with hearty meals often cooked over open flames and served at shared tables, fostering that classic safari camaraderie that's increasingly rare in modern camps.

Activities follow the standard Linyanti repertoire but with particular emphasis on walking safaris that allow intimate exploration of the concession's varied terrain—from riverine forest to savannah grasslands and lush lagoons. Day and night game drives provide excellent predator viewing, especially during the dry season when massive elephant and buffalo herds congregate along the permanent water source. Seasonal mokoro canoe trips offer peaceful water-based wildlife encounters when conditions permit, and the area's spectacular birdlife makes it a year-round paradise for birders seeking carmine bee-eaters and other wetland species.

The Accommodation

Linyanti Expeditions Camp offers just six tented accommodations that embrace a deliberately stripped-back, expedition-style approach to safari living. The tents are firmly rooted to the ground in traditional style, elevated on wooden decking with views stretching out over the Linyanti marshland. Built using natural materials—canvas, wood, leather, and copper—the rooms have a sumptuously simple aesthetic with earthen tones that create a timeless, lived-in feel perfectly suited to the wilderness setting. Large canvas windows and sides can be rolled up to dissolve the barrier between inside and out, while each tent contains either a large double or twin beds draped with mosquito netting, plus extra blankets for cooler winter nights. A shaded veranda at the front of each tent features wooden chairs with comfortable cushions, ideal for relaxing during the midday siesta.

The en-suite bathrooms maintain the authentic bush camp character with eco-friendly chemical flush toilets and traditional bucket showers—hot water is brought on request, making mid-afternoon the best time for bathing. Cold running water comes from a five-liter reservoir outside each tent. Solar power provides lighting and table fans in the rooms, with a backup generator available when needed. It's certainly more rustic than many modern Botswana camps, harking back to an earlier era of safari when comfort took a backseat to genuine wilderness immersion.

The standout feature of each tent is the unique "star suite" extension—a gazebo-style addition where your bed can be wheeled out at night for an unforgettable sleep-out experience. Protected only by thin mesh walls and roof, you'll fall asleep beneath a blanket of stars with the sounds of the African night surrounding you, all while remaining safely enclosed. This combination of back-to-basics authenticity with thoughtful touches makes Linyanti Expeditions ideal for adventurous travelers who prioritize the safari experience over plush amenities.
