Dry Safaris

Ngoma Safari Lodge sits in a pretty enviable spot on the edge of an escarpment overlooking the Chobe River and its floodplains. It's located in the Chobe Forest Reserve on a private concession that borders the western side of Chobe National Park, which means you get the exclusivity of a private reserve with easy access to one of Africa's most famous wildlife areas. The lodge itself is small and intimate with just eight suites, so it never feels crowded or like you're part of a safari assembly line. What makes the location special is that you're perfectly positioned to catch the famous Chobe elephant herds, along with massive buffalo populations and the incredible zebra migration that happens through this area.

Unlike many safari properties that go the tented route, Ngoma is built with permanent structures using brick, thatch, and volcanic rock that naturally occurs in the area. The design philosophy seems to be about celebrating those sweeping views while keeping things understated and blended into the landscape. The main lodge area has a pool, dining room, and bar all facing out toward the river, with plenty of decks and lounging spots where you can watch the floodplains come alive. It's also a community partnership project, which means local communities benefit directly through land leasing and employment opportunities.

The activities here cover all the bases – morning and afternoon game drives into Chobe National Park, walking safaris if you want to stretch your legs, and boat cruises on the Chobe River which are available year-round. The river cruises are particularly good for getting close to elephants and hippos. The lodge manages to strike a nice balance between proper luxury and staying connected to the wild setting around you.

The Accommodation

Ngoma Safari Lodge takes a different approach than most bush camps by building permanent suites rather than going the tented route. There are eight suites in total, all constructed from brick and thatch with volcanic rock finishes that help them blend into the landscape. What really sets these rooms apart is the view – each suite sits on the edge of an escarpment looking out over the Chobe River and floodplains below. Those floor-to-ceiling windows mean you can watch elephants grazing or buffalo herds moving across the plains right from your bed. The standard suites sleep two, while two of them can accommodate families with extra beds if needed.

Each suite feels genuinely spacious, with both indoor and outdoor living areas that give you plenty of room to spread out. The bathrooms are particularly impressive, featuring enormous bathtubs that are perfect after a day bouncing around in a game drive vehicle. You get both an indoor shower and an outdoor one, plus there's a private plunge pool on your deck – which is a nice touch when the afternoon heat kicks in. The rooms come with all the usual amenities like minibars and coffee stations, but what's unusual for safari properties is that they've got proper air conditioning in addition to ceiling fans.

The suites also have WiFi, which is pretty rare out here in the bush. Everything's finished with natural materials and local fabrics that give it an authentically African feel without going overboard on the safari theme. The setup prioritizes privacy while making the most of those incredible views, so you can enjoy your own little slice of Chobe without feeling like you're in anyone else's space.
