Okavango Delta

Dry Safaris

Situated in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta, Vumbura Plains is actually two separate satellite camps – North and South – each operating independently within a private concession that borders the Moremi Game Reserve. Together they accommodate a maximum of twenty-eight guests in fourteen rooms total, with seven tented suites in each camp. The location is particularly special because it offers such diverse habitats: you've got seasonal floodplains, permanent waterways, mopane woodland, and open savannah all within the concession. This variety means you can enjoy both land and water activities year-round, which isn't always possible at other Delta camps. The game viewing is genuinely excellent, with regular sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and massive herds of elephant and buffalo.

The camps themselves are stunning examples of contemporary safari design. Everything is raised on wooden platforms and connected by elevated walkways, giving you that treehouse perspective while keeping you safe when elephants wander through. Each camp has its own lounge, dining area, and bar with expansive decks jutting out over the floodplains – perfect for sundowners or stargazing around the campfire. The whole aesthetic is light, airy, and modern, using lots of wood and glass to create spaces that feel both luxurious and connected to the landscape. There's a real Scandinavian influence to the design that sets it apart from more traditional safari camps.

The concession operates through a partnership with the Okavango Community Trust, with the land leased from five local villages. This means tourism revenue flows directly back to rural communities, providing employment and supporting higher living standards in the area. It's a model that benefits everyone involved.

The Accommodation

The accommodations at Vumbura Plains are consistently described as among the most spacious and luxurious in all of Botswana, and once you see them, you understand why. Each of the fourteen tented suites – seven in North Camp and seven in South Camp – is built on raised wooden platforms and connected by elevated walkways. The design is strikingly contemporary with a distinct Scandinavian influence, using lots of light-colored wood, glass, and open space to create an airy, modern feel that's quite different from traditional safari tents. The layout is essentially square, which maximizes the interior space and gives you multiple vantage points for taking in the floodplain views.

Inside, you'll find a large comfortable bedroom with either twin or double beds positioned to capture those Okavango vistas the moment you wake up. There's a sunken lounge area with plush cushions that's open on three sides, allowing the landscape to flow right into your living space. The en-suite bathrooms are seriously impressive, featuring double vanities, indoor showers, and outdoor showers where you can rinse off while watching hippos drift past in the channels below. All the practical touches are covered – minibar, tea and coffee facilities, ceiling fan, hairdryer, and a safe stocked with useful items like binoculars and mosquito repellent.

The real showstopper is your private deck with its own plunge pool and sala, a covered outdoor lounge area perfect for afternoon siestas or wildlife watching. Two of the suites are configured as family units with connecting rooms linked by shared decks, making them ideal for parents traveling with older children. The whole setup manages to feel both incredibly luxurious and authentically connected to the wild surroundings.
