Mobile Safari Summary

This seven-night camping safari runs from Maun to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, covering Botswana's primary wildlife areas in a compressed timeframe. The route typically includes sections of the Okavango Delta and surrounding reserves like Moremi, where game drives happen twice daily during cooler morning and afternoon hours.

Camping accommodations keep costs lower than lodge-based alternatives while maintaining access to productive wildlife areas. You'll move between different camp locations throughout the week, with tents set up in concession areas away from permanent infrastructure. Meals are prepared at camp, and facilities are basic but functional for the duration.

The condensed schedule means you're covering ground relatively quickly compared to longer safaris, spending one or two nights in each location before moving on. Wildlife sightings depend on seasonal movements and water availability, with better concentrations during dry months when animals gather around permanent sources.

Victoria Falls serves as the trip's conclusion, giving you a day or two there before departing. The falls' flow varies significantly throughout the year, heaviest during high-water months

What happens on a normal safari day?

  • The day starts early because that’s when the animals are out. You’ll have coffee and a bite to eat around the fire before dawn, then head straight out for a game drive, walk, or boat trip depending on where you’re staying.
  • After a few hours tracking wildlife, your guide will pull over somewhere scenic for tea and biscuits. You’ll be back at camp by mid-morning with time to wash up at your basin before brunch—usually fresh bread, something warm from the kitchen, and cold salads.
  • The middle of the day is yours to sleep, read, take a proper shower, or just sit and absorb what you saw that morning. Late afternoon you’ll head out again for another drive or boat outing. In private areas outside the national parks, these can run past sunset with a spotlight to pick up leopards, genets, and other nocturnal animals that don’t show themselves during the day.
  • That’s the general rhythm, though your guide will adjust things based on what’s actually happening—where the elephants are moving, if there’s been a recent kill, weather changes, that sort of thing. No two days run exactly the same.

What happens when you move to another location?

  • Moving days start earlier than usual. You’ll pack up after a quick coffee, then drive to a scenic spot for a proper breakfast—maybe overlooking a floodplain or dried riverbed. From there, it’s game viewing while traveling toward your next camp, with stops for tea and biscuits along the way.
  • Lunch happens under whatever big trees your guide finds, usually acacia or sausage trees with decent shade. By that point you’re close enough to the new camp that the crew has already driven ahead and set everything up. You’ll arrive to find your tent standing exactly as it was that morning, just in a completely different landscape.
  • There’s time for a shower and afternoon tea before heading out to explore the new area—different waterholes, different vegetation, often completely different animals than what you were seeing the day before.
  • The timing on these travel days shifts around depending on distance, road conditions, and what wildlife shows up along the route. If there’s a pride of lions on a kill or a big elephant herd blocking the track, you might spend an extra hour there and compress something else. Your guide will read the situation and adjust accordingly. The drive times given are just the actual driving—they don’t account for the inevitable stops when something interesting crosses your path.

Daily Itinerary

Arrival

Please note: as the safari starts at 07h30 on Day 1, you will need to pre-night in Maun and purchase drinks for your safari the day before your safari starts. Bush Ways can assist with pre-safari arrangements such as accommodation and transfers.

On the afternoon of your pre-night, you will have the option of taking a 45min flight in a helicopter with no windows and doors, allowing magnificent views from above. Both experiences have to be booked prior to arrival, and payment made in USD cash only. Transfers are not included and extra charges will apply. During the flight it is possible to spot large game animals such as elephant, giraffe and hippopotami.

Day 1 - 3

Your safari adventure kicks off in Maun, where your guide will meet you at 07:30 at a pre-arranged location. From Maun, you will journey to Moremi Game Reserve, one of Botswana’s premier wilderness areas encompassing both swamp and dry landscapes. For the next three days, you will embark on a quest to discover the diverse wildlife and bird species that this region is famous for, while soaking in the stunning sounds and sights around you. You’ll spend three nights exploring this magnificent Game Reserve, staying at two different campsites. Early morning game drives at sunrise, and late afternoon drives at sunset will be the routine. Camping will take place in private designated campsites equipped with bush ablutions.

Day 4

Next, you will head to Chobe National Park, renowned for its varied and stunning landscapes. As you continue your search for wildlife, you’ll explore the drier Savute region, where herds of bull elephants roam the plains. Your journey will then take you north to the Chobe River, where your game drives will meander along the riverbanks, accompanied by the calls of the majestic African Fish Eagle. Camping will be in private designated areas featuring bush ablutions, starting in the Savute area (Day 4) and moving to the northern section of the park near the riverfront (Days 5 & 6).

Day 5 - 6

You will journey north to the Chobe River, where your game drives will wind along the river banks, guided by the call of the magnificent African Fish Eagle. Experience a diverse array of wildlife, including puku and Chobe bushbuck, alongside breathtaking birdlife in this extraordinary river ecosystem. Transfer and game drive from Southern Chobe National Park to the Chobe River floodplain. Enjoy game drives as you explore Northern Chobe National Park.

Day 7

Following a brief morning game drive, your guide will escort you to the Kazungula border, where you will meet your transfer vehicle to your lodge in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (Visa required). This is where your time with the Botswana (including translators) will come to an ends as they handover the group to the Zimbabwean team.

You will spend the night at a comfortable lodge. In the afternoons, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the thundering Victoria Falls and shop for souvenirs. Lunch and dinner will be at your own expense.

day 8

The safari will officially end after breakfast on Day 8 at the lodge
