Leroo La Tau occupies a spectacular position perched high on cliffs overlooking the Boteti River, which forms the western boundary of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The name translates to "lion's paw," and the lodge lives up to its predatory reputation with excellent sightings of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas that follow the massive concentrations of zebra and wildebeest. The Boteti River is the main outflow of the Okavango Delta and serves as a critical lifeline for wildlife in this arid region, particularly during the spectacular migration season between May and October when up to thirty thousand zebra and wildebeest congregate along its banks. The lodge's elevated position more than ten meters above the riverbed provides unparalleled viewing opportunities across the water to the vast grasslands and salt pans beyond.
The lodge comprises twelve thatched, glass-fronted suites including one family unit, each raised on wooden platforms to maximize the dramatic river views. The main area features a comfortable lounge and dining space with traditional wooden and thatch finishes, an inviting bar, and a plunge pool where guests can cool off while watching wildlife below. A unique game-viewing hide is built directly into the riverbank, offering an intimate perspective on animals coming to drink. Activities focus primarily on game drives through Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, with both day and night drives available to spot the diverse wildlife that thrives here.
For guests staying three nights or longer, Leroo La Tau offers one of Botswana's most memorable experiences—sleeping out under the stars on the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans themselves. Optional excursions include cultural visits to nearby Khumaga Village, day trips to Nxai Pan and the famous Baines' Baobabs, and seasonal boat safaris on the river when water levels permit. It's a dramatically different landscape from the lush Okavango Delta, offering a taste of Botswana's desert wilderness.
