Okavango Delta

Dry Safaris

Daunara Camp occupies a remote corner of the Okavango Delta, positioned on the edge of seasonal floodplains where water levels dictate the rhythm of wildlife movements. This intimate camp sits within a private concession that sees minimal tourist traffic, creating an atmosphere of genuine wilderness immersion. With only five tents, the scale remains deliberately small, focusing attention on the delta's wildlife rather than camp infrastructure.

The area offers diverse Okavango experiences depending on water levels. During flood season, mokoro excursions glide through papyrus-lined channels and shallow lagoons where red lechwe wade and hippos lounge. As waters recede, game drives become the primary activity, tracking elephants, lions, and leopards across drying floodplains. Walking safaris provide intimate encounters with smaller wildlife and insights into tracking techniques. The seasonal transformation from aquatic to terrestrial safari creates distinct experiences depending on visit timing.

Accommodation reflects permanent luxury lodges. Canvas tents sit on raised platforms with en-suite bathrooms and private viewing decks facing the floodplain. The main area centres around communal dining and evening campfires where guides share wildlife stories. Solar lighting and unfenced boundaries maintain the authentic bush camp atmosphere, where elephant visitors occasionally wander through and wildlife sounds dominate after dark.

The Accommodation

The five tents at Daunara follow classic mobile safari camp design with canvas walls, wooden floors, and mesh windows that keep the bush atmosphere authentic. Each tent sits on a raised wooden platform overlooking the floodplain, spaced apart for privacy while maintaining views across the seasonal wetlands. The elevated positioning offers protection during occasional flooding and provides better sightlines for spotting wildlife moving through camp.

Sleeping arrangements feature either twin beds or a double configuration, all with quality linens and mosquito netting draped overhead. En-suite bathrooms maintain the rustic safari aesthetic with bucket showers that deliver hot water heated by camp staff—a charmingly traditional touch that actually works remarkably well. Flush toilets and basin areas complete the facilities, functional rather than luxurious but perfectly adequate for the setting. Small bedside tables and storage areas handle the essentials without cluttering the tent interior.

Private wooden decks extend from each tent with comfortable chairs positioned for wildlife watching during downtime. Solar panels provide lighting after dark, creating soft illumination that doesn't overwhelm the night sky. The unfenced camp layout means elephants and other animals occasionally pass directly by the tents, adding genuine thrill to evening hours. This setup deliberately emphasizes wilderness immersion over creature comforts, appealing to travellers who value authentic bush experiences.
