Okavango Delta

Mixed Safaris

Little Vumbura stands as one of the most sought-after intimate camps in the Okavango Delta, nestled on a forested private island within the vast 148,000-acre Vumbura Concession in the northern reaches of this pristine wilderness. With just six tented suites including one family unit, the camp delivers an exceptionally personalized safari experience that feels more like joining a close-knit family than checking into a lodge. Accessible only by boat after landing at the airstrip—a journey that immediately reinforces the sense of remoteness and adventure—the camp is shaded by an ancient forest canopy while surrounded by broad rivers, reed-covered plains, and annually flooded grasslands. The setting is utterly idyllic, bordering Moremi Game Reserve in an area that's uniquely positioned between the water-rich Delta and the drier Chobe region, creating remarkable habitat diversity.

This transitional location means Little Vumbura offers genuinely excellent year-round game viewing with both water and land activities always available—a combination that's surprisingly rare in the Delta where many camps are limited by seasonal flooding. The diverse habitats support an impressive array of wildlife including healthy populations of elephant, giraffe, buffalo, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, tsessebe, wildebeest, and the water-loving red lechwe. Predator sightings are consistently strong, with several resident lion prides, leopards, cheetahs, and those highly coveted African wild dogs that roam the concession. The waterways teem with hippos and crocodiles, while the birdlife is spectacular throughout the year.

Activities span the full Delta repertoire with traditional mokoro canoe excursions meandering through floodplains captained by skilled polers, motorboat trips along permanent channels, morning and afternoon game drives in open Land Rovers, and seasonal guided walking safaris when qualified guides are available. The private concession allows off-road tracking and thrilling night drives, while optional hot air ballooning and cultural village visits can be arranged. The camp's commitment to community partnership is evident—the land is leased from five local villages through the Okavango Community Trust, ensuring tourism benefits flow directly to rural stakeholders while providing employment and skills development opportunities.

The Accommodation

Little Vumbura features six spacious luxury tented suites shaded beneath the canopy of an ancient Delta forest on a picturesque private island. Five of these are standard double tents, while the sixth is a specially configured family unit that accommodates four guests across two en-suite rooms connected by an interleading door and a shared sunken lounge area. Each tent is raised on wooden platforms and accessed via elevated walkways that wind through the trees, creating a sense of being suspended within the forest canopy. The design is luxuriously appointed with locally inspired décor, polished wood floors, and romantic touches including large screened windows that bring the sounds and sights of the wilderness directly into your room while maintaining comfort and privacy.

The tented suites are genuinely spacious and beautifully furnished, featuring en-suite bathrooms with both indoor showers and outdoor showers that allow you to bathe under the sky surrounded by the bush. Modern amenities include hot and cold running water, plush towels, full toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion and insect repellent, and all the creature comforts you need after long days exploring the Delta. The real highlight of each tent is the private veranda or reading deck that extends outward, furnished with comfortable lounge sofas and chairs where you can sit with your morning coffee or evening drink while watching wildlife move across the surrounding floodplains and waterways.

The positioning of each tent maximizes both privacy and views, with generous spacing between accommodations ensuring you feel genuinely secluded despite being part of a small camp community. The private decks offer incredible scenic vistas over the water and floodplains, providing front-row seats to the constant wildlife activity—from elephants and antelope grazing to water birds feeding along the channels. The family unit's shared deck and private entrances make it particularly well-suited for families or friends traveling together who want both communal space and individual privacy, while couples find the romantic ambiance of the standard tents perfect for intimate Delta escapes.
