Moremi Game Reserve - WET Camp
Price Range (2017)

Xigera is a fantastic water camp just inside the boundaries of Moremi National Park. The big game that normally traverses Chief Island around here is generally cut off from camp by permanent water. What you have left though is a little slice of paradise with a tropical feel.
The camp itself blends in very well with its lush environment with secret raised walkways that go over some of the many little channels around camp.
Paradise island offers a fantastic array of birdlife which can all be seen with the excellent mokoro or motorboat excursion. Bigger game can be seen, such as lion etc, but it is not what the area is known for and as such the game drive activities here may not be the reason why you visit.

Although Xigera Camp is considered to be a permanent water camp, one may be surprised by the presence of lion, leopard, hyaena and buffalo on the islands. These animals will happily wade and swim between islands in search of food.
This is the land of the sitatunga antelope and Pel's Fishing-Owl. Water birds are also seen in large numbers including Rufous-bellied Heron and the secretive White-backed Night-Heron. Papyrus swamp specialists include Greater Swamp-Warbler, Coppery-tailed Coucal and Luapula Cisticola. Birding around Xigera Camp and on other islands is also extremely productive for specials like Brown Firefinch, Swamp Boubou, Hartlaub's Babbler and Western Banded Snake-Eagle. A displaying African Goshawk can often be seen in the morning.
One of the great secrets of the Xigera Camp is the presence of Okavango-born tribesmen as guides. Some of these men were born a stone's throw from the present location of the camp and know every turn and tree in this magical wetland.
When water levels permit, game drives are an attraction. During drier years, drives are available throughout the year, but if there has been a very high flood, drives take place only from late September to April.
Xigera Camp is a delight for birdwatchers, with Pel's Fishing-Owl, African Skimmer, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane and a host of raptors, other waterbirds and colourful kingfishers to be seen. An abundance of wildlife includes red lechwe, lion, and spotted hyaena.
Nestled in a magnificent riverine forest, Xigera Camp epitomises the region: a tranquil true Okavango Delta experience. Xigera Camp feels like a place apart, a blue-green bubble in which birds sing and baboons bark, people laugh and glide by on mokoro. Each tent looks out over water that idles dreamily past, undisturbed by the urban cacophony of modern living.
Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) is located on a riverine island right in the heart of the Okavango Delta. This part of the Moremi Game Reserve is a true wetland paradise, with Xigera Camp surrounded by deep channels and lush vegetation.
Xigera camp sits on the permanent waters of the Okavango inside the famous Moremi Game Reserve in a completely remote section where ther are no other lodges at all. The camp is simply contracted from thatch and canvas in keeping with its surrounding and perfectly compliments the tropical jungle feeling you experience when you are here.
The main area is approached via a footbridge over the permanent waters. The slightly unusual layout of the camp sees the main area at the front on the permanent channel with all the accommodation fanned out to the rear, the lodge is situated on an island and each tent sits on the edge to take advantage of the views.
The living area is simply designed in a classical Africa look and feel with a lovely raised thatched roof covering a simply furnished lounge area with settees and armchairs, a separate dinning area and bar. To the front there is a sweeping deck on the channel with a fire pit for the evenings. Separately there is boma for outside dining and a plunge pool area.
Uniquely, Xigera is the only camp that we know of that fully utilises a drawbridge.
All rooms are reachable via a raised walkway around the island. Tents are built on decks that stand on stilts with a reasonable sized veranda with seating so that you can enjoy the Delta views. Entrance is via a sliding wooden double door with gauze windows into a room with wooden floors and dominated by a large comfortable bed with mosquito netting. Extra seating is provided within the tent.
The en-suite bathroom is at the rear of the tent and is separated by a large full height headboard. There are nice his and hers basins and a separate shower area. An outside shower is also provided for that alfresco feeling.
Xigera Camp is positioned on the extreme western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve, placing it at the very centre of the Okavango Delta alluvial fan. This magnificent area epitomises the permanently flooded section of the Okavango Delta: with palm-filled hardwood islands, hardwood riverine forests, a multitude of clear water channels and expansive flood plains.
Permanent water year-round allows an unparalleled variety of activities such as mokoro trips, game drives and motorboat outings. Xigera Camp is the only camp in the area - ensuring total privacy.
A mokoro ride is mandatory at Xigera Camp. On this traditional dug-out canoe, the only sounds are the rustling of the wind through the reeds, the lapping of the water against the boat, and the call of the African Fish-Eagle. The blue of the sky is mirrored in the water, broken only by large round water lily leaves and their stunning purple and white flowers.
