Safari Lifestyles View

We are unable to make up our minds about the styling of the accommodation here at Okuti. It certainly is different to pretty much every lodge of its type.

Perhaps you should visit and make your own minds up, after all the camp sits in a lovely area of the Moremi Game Reserve, and although the park rules dictate that no nights drives may be taken nor off road activities, the camp offers very good excursions in a game rich and famous environment.

The group owners are known for camps with rustic charm and great activities at a reasonable price, we have always enjoyed our stay at Okuti.

Wildlife & Activities

The ever present herds of buffalo, elephant, zebra, wildebeest and impala are complimented with fantastic sightings of red lechwe racing through the waterways. Along the permanent waterways of the Delta, one might if are lucky see the very elusive sitatunga antelope and more common reed buck and water buck.

Predator species are high in number, especially with lion and hyena. Leopard sighting are extremely good as are cheetah and wild dog.

Due to the nature of the waterways, flooded plains and dryer areas, birdlife is some of the best available in the country. Birds range from Africa Pygmy-Goose flying low over the waters, Coppery-tailed Coucal, Bateleur Eagles and the rare Wattled Crane and Slaty Egret.

The Camp

Camp Overview

This delightful camp lies alongside the Maunachira River which flows through Xakanaxa Lagoon within the world renowned Moremi Game Reserve. Offering a welcome touch of comfort, Okuti is built amidst the wilderness of one of Botswana's prime game viewing regions.

Okuti comprises five twin-bedded units, each with en-suite bathrooms, shower and bath, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. An additional two family units consist of two bedrooms which share spacious bathroom facilities – ideal for families in this child-friendly lodge.

Lodge Layout

Raised walkways throughout take you around this very interestingly designed camp which stretches over some flooded waterways. The main feature is that the camp is placed nicely on a small part of the Xakanaxa lagoon.

The construction is of thatch and solid walls in places and rondavels, the architecture is quite different to that of any camp in Botswana. The lounge is a long affair that sits under what can only be described as a very high tunnelled roof. The furnishings here are smart and contemporary and feel correct for the style of the building. There is ample room to site here and take in the architecture.

Arched openings look onto the veranda where there is an expansive decked area and a fire pit and includes a plunge pool. Back inside from this location is a large and long dinning area, again under a similar roof structure.

Room Description

Each of the 7 accommodations are styled again in a tunnel like fashion with very high curved roofs. Each has great views over the waterways from their own private decks, they are is quite close to each other but in a good position.

To the inside, the high roof line is totally covered with dry reeds, an effect which is very pleasing to the eye. Wooden flooring is combined with head height solid walls and these room are quite large for their standard.

The beds are large and comfortable, there is a cow hide on the floor and some uniquely designed seating. The en-suite facilities are simple and include washbasin and shower, there is also an outside shower for your use.

There are two family suites at Okuti that are of a similar design to the normal ones, however in these there are two bedroom, both of which share the en-suite facilities.

Camp Environment

Okuti is located tight against the Xakanaxa lagoon and affords splendid views over the water. The camp is situated in a tree-lined area with small waterways filled with papayrus. Originally the royal hunting grounds of Chief Moremi, it was designated a Game Reserve in the 1960’s and whilst growing in size, has since achieved National Park status.

It is the sheer diversity of fauna and flora and its differing landscapes that make this area such a highly desirable place to visit. There is arguably no-where else in Botswana that offers a myriad of lagoons, open dry areas, permanent water channels interspersed with Mopane forests and Palm fringed islands that sit in the middle of flooded plains.
