Safari Lifestyles View

Muchenje Lodge sits just outside the confines of the Chobe National Park to the south western side of the river area. The huge benefit of this is that the lodge is not in Kasane and therefore does not get involved in the daily hustle and bustle at that end to get into the Chobe River. Rather, the camp uses the southern gate, which is much quieter.

The lodge itself is very comfortable and feels much more like a proper bush lodge than its Kasane counterparts in that it is much smaller and is located in the Chobe Forest Reseve which is attached to the park albeit from the southern side. You have wonderful sweeping views over the Chobe River and are in an area where one can conduct day and night drives as well as bush walks, river cruises and off course excursions into the National Park itself.

This is a proper safari Lodge and therefore has a price to match.

Wildlife & Activities

Wildlife

Away from the busier areas to the east., we don’t think that you will ever tire of the elephants, there are some other wonderful wildlife viewing opportunities on offer, not least of which are the vast herds of Cape Buffalo… then there is the good lion population, elusive leopards and the beautiful African wild dogs.

Antelope species, too, are well represented, including the common, but still beautiful, impala, the majestic Sable, and the endemic Chobe bushbuck. Birding is excellent, and as Botswana has in excess of 350 species you r check-list is sure to fill-up. Should be travelling between November and March, there are also a number of migratory species to add to the list and experience.

The Chobe River is home to a good number of hippo, pods of which enliven huge stretches of the River, along with some truly massive and ancient crocodiles. Your game viewing might also be enriched by a family of Chacma baboon – with the youngsters capering about, irritating the adults, and generally having fun….

Even after returning the Lodge you will have to chance for more fantastic game sightings and birds… we are not fenced-in and wildlife is free wander in and around camp, and although we are justly proud of the neighbouring National Park, we invite you to sit back and relax in camp, and watch the world go by….

Activities

Game drives in our open and truly comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles.  Enjoy game drives with our knowledgeable and friendly professionally qualified guides – either early morning, afternoon or even the full day.

Game viewing by boat on the Chobe River – a wonderful chance to see huge herds of elephants, as well as many other mammals and birds attracted to the water’s edge, not to mention those animals which also live in the River!

Bush walking-safaris which allow you to learn about the intricacies of the bush where your guide teaches you about the spoor, trees, plants and insects that make for such exciting and interesting additions to the wildlife experience

‘Night eyes’ – night game drives in the lodge’s own concession. The guide uses a spotlight to show the local ‘night life’, which can range from the small mammals, to buffalo and elephant.

Visits to our local village for a cultural experience and to meet the people that make Botswana the delightful country that it is

The Camp

Camp Overview

Muchenje Safari Lodge enjoys a unique position to the west of Botswana’s famed Chobe National Park The camp sits on an escarpment with wonderful views of the Chobe River, and Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and seasonal flood plains.

Unusual for a Botswana Lodge, Muchenje is owner run and managed, which allows for a more personalised service.

Lodge Layout

Muchenje Safari Lodge’s position on an escarpment of the Chobe River means that it commands exceptional views. Guests can therefore enjoy game viewing from the convenience of their private veranda, the pool deck or one of the viewing decks.

The lodge has just 11 guest rooms giving an exclusive feel to the property. The main Lodge area is extensive, and has been built to allow for excellent vistas, comfort and charm. you can relax in the many quiet areas; from the viewing platforms and decks, the dining area and bar. A little retail therapy is also at hand, at the curio shop.

Close by is the swimming pool, complete with deck and more excellent views. There are not too many places in and around Chobe that have a view over the floodplains etc... luckily Muchenje is one of these lodges.

Room Description

Muchenje offers 11 thatched  Safari bungalows, each being beautifully appointed  having its own unique view of the Chobe River and its floodplains

.

The bathroom is a good size with shower, toilet and his and hers hand-basins. Each Safari Suite has a ceiling fan, wardrobe, electric safe and writing table. You also have a private, shaded veranda, from which to take in the sights and sounds.

Of the 11 Safari  rooms, 1 is a family unit, and accommodates 4 guests. There is a double bed and full bathroom downstairs, and a loft area with 2 single beds upstairs. This unit also works well for a small group of friends travelling together.

Camp Environment

You can enjoy flexibility in terms of activities, and wonderful hospitality in an idyllic setting. Muchenje Safari Lodge’s position means that it is far away from the bustle in Kasane, and guests enjoy extensive game drives in a less visited section of the Chobe National Park.

In addition, as the Lodge is located in the Chobe Forest Reserve, game walks and night drives are also available, which add immeasurably to the wildlife experience.

Chobe National Park and its surrounds, is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. The sheer quantity of game often surprises the most discerning Safari Clientele. Home to four of the Big Five; Chobe is understandably famous for its elephant herds – and it is not uncommon to see hundreds of these magnificent animals on the flood plains at any one time.
