Safari Lifestyles View

Machaba Camp is newly built in late 2012.  The camp site in a beautiful riverine area that has very good reputations for game.

The Khwai community concession sits right on the border with the Moremi Game Reserve and as there are no fences to the reserve itself and the wildlife flows freely between the two areas.

Wildlife sightings here have been tremendous over that last few years with regular sighting of resident lion, leopard and packs of wild dogs that often den here. The camp itself is beautifully done in an "old school" style where the whole lodge is tent based and the accommodations are to very high standard. This is the kind of lodge which takes you back in time a little and seems less fussy than most. Sitting in probably the best area of Khwai and right on the Khwai River itself, your down time at the lodge between activities can sometimes be the best viewpoint for wandering animals.

Activities here are excellent, day and night drives are available as is the ability to go off-road to follow elusive leopards.

Safari Lifestyles really likes this camp and feel that its well priced considering the area it is in, the experiences offered and the quality of the accommodation.... in fact, it is currently our favourite camp in Botswana..!!

Wildlife & Activities

Wildlife

The wildlife viewing is generated around similar species to that of the general Oakavango Delta. In and around Khwai you can see general plains game such as elephant, impala, zebra and wildebeest sable antelope with great concentrations of lion, leopard and hyena. In recent seasons there have also been good numbers of wild dogs and some occasional cheetah.

The more aquatic animals like hippo, waterbuck and red lechwe are generally always seen depending on the area visited.

Birdlife is also strong and concentrates on the main river area where lovely flocks of pygmy goose and white-faced ducks mingle with spur-winged goose, comb ducks and African Jacanas.

The Camp

Camp Overview

Machaba Camp is situated in the game rich Khwai area, on the eastern tongue of the Okavango Delta. The name Machaba is the local Setswana name for the Sycamore Fig Tree, the tree of life. The Machaba tree abounds in the Okavango Delta and most African riverine forests.

Machaba trees are renowned for their abundant fruit, which feed a vast array of animals throughout the year, including elephant, baboons, bush buck, green pigeons and many more.

The camp is built in the classic 1950's style, with luxury safari tents, en-suite bathrooms and living areas, not forgetting the romantic outdoor showers. All the tents are situated on the ground and the pathways to the tents meander between the large riverine trees

Lodge Layout

All 10 luxury tents are situated in the beautiful riverine tree line on the Khwai River, overlooking the famous Moremi Game Reserve. From these tented verandas one can watch the daily parade of animals coming down to drink at the river in front of camp.

You arrive at camp at its entrance and only then do you begin to understand how thick the area is with trees. Probably not even having seen the Khwai River on the way in, you walk to the main entrance of the communal area. sonstructed beautifully in grey canvas in a slightly Aarabic style, the lounge is to your left and the dining area to the right. In front of you is a large and raised sandy area where safari chairs and a campfire await for your relaxation. in the middle of this sandy ledge is the big Machaba tree, form here you are right on the Khwai River with its stunning views... we know this camp well and much game activity can be seen from this vantage point.

The lounge is awash with an array comfortable sofas, wooden chairs, cabinets, lamps, glassware and African bric-a-brac, all very tastefully chosen to be an eclectic mix of old and modern.... the effect is very pleasing and one which sits perfectly within this very simple structure.

The dining area is again very furnished with table with crisp white cloth and expensive glassware. Cooked English breakfasts are prepared right before you on a small kitchenette at the end of this area

To one end of the camp, past the last tent is a good sized swimming pool with wooden decking and sun-loungers under umbrellas... the pool looks right over the river and its not unusual to have elephant feeding close by.

Overall, its a delightful place to spend time in.

Room Description

The room are all fanned out either side of the main lodge and all have views over the Khwai River and are secluded enough from each other being set in quite thick bush.

For the daily rate of this camp, the rooms are some of the best in Botswana. They are quite cavernous in size and made from grey canvas and steel poles. Each tent as standard has a small seating area outside with chairs for you to relax in and a table and a canvas washbasin to wash you hands in. Through a large zipped doorway (in traditional African bush camp style) you are led into the main area comprising of a large room with a very large "campaign" style steel bed. Grass matting covers most of the floor and there is a lovely writing table, lamp and chair together with a beautiful soft armchair.

A canvas slipway to the rear leads you to the large ablution area with unusually designed his and hers wash basins with his and hers leather-clad hanging mirrors. Also in this area is a good sized internal shower and toilet. There is also a doorway that leads to a lovely and unique outside shower... unique as in the shower's effect is that it passes through a bucket... those of us who travel to the bush often, know exactly what a bucket shower is!

Camp Environment

The camp sits right on the Khwai River in the Khwai Community Concession on the border of the Moremi Game Reserve.

This area is deemed to be a public concession and is of outstanding beauty, delivering the same reputation as Moremi, in that the diversity of game and vegetation is shared. Much smaller in size, its real benefit is accessibility and differences in accommodation, which is mostly more affordable in terms of its lodges and its suitability for Mobile Safaris and Self Drivers.

Machaba Camp sits in a very thick area right on the river in the concession, our view is that it holds the best spot of any lodge. Pretty much every lodge maintains the policy of guiding guests back their tent in darker hours, none more so important as at Machaba as there are many predators in the area and the thick bush makes them harder to spot.
