Wildlife & Activities

Wildlife

This wild and pristine area has over the years produced some phenomenal wildlife encounters including the filming and studying of the African wild dog packs which inhabit this area.

Activities

Game drives

Game drives are conducted in the mornings and afternoon/evenings at camp. They usually last about three hours each and are conducted along the river systems and flood plains around the camp. The wildlife in the area is prolific and chances are good to see some of the larger predators, herds of elephant and buffalo and all the plains animals that occur here. Night drives are conducted in the early evening offering one a chance to see the smaller more nocturnal animals with spotlights.

Mekoro safari

This is a dug out canoe poled by an experienced poler in the shallower waters of the Okavango. It is a great way to see the waterways and is tranquil and quiet. These excursions take place in the mornings or longer day trips can be arranged. Explore the islands around camp and come back rested and rejuvenated.

Walking

Walking safaris are also conducted generally in the morning with armed guides. The walks are leisurely and time is taken to observe the smaller things in the bush that one normally misses when driving. Walking is weather dependent, or dependent on the condition of the terrain.

The Camp

Camp Overview

The Gomoti tree is locally known as the water fig and grows alongside waterways in the Okavango delta. It’s a smallish tree which sometimes grows no bigger than a bush. The Gomoti trees line the waterways and provide excellent cover for nesting water birds such as herons and storks.

Situated on the edge of the Gomoti river system is Gomoti Plains Camp. This camp camp has 10 luxury tents which include 2 luxury family tents and 8 luxury double tents, all with en-suite bathroom facilities.

Built in a similar style to our signature Machaba Luxury tents, the Gomoti Plains tents and main area are slightly raised on wooden decks overlooking the Gomoti river system.

Lodge Layout

Borrowing very heaving from its group camp leader, Machaba, Gomoti's main lounge and dinning area form the central point to all the accommodation which fan out beside it.

Accommodation quite cavernous in size and made from grey canvas and steel poles. Each tent as standard has a small seating area outside with chairs for you to relax in and a table and a canvas washbasin to wash you hands in. Through a large zipped doorway (in traditional African bush camp style) you are led into the main area comprising of a large room with a very large "campaign" style steel bed. Grass matting covers most of the floor and there is a lovely writing table, lamp and chair together with a beautiful soft armchair.

A canvas slipway to the rear leads you to the large ablution area with unusually designed his and hers wash basins with his and hers leather-clad hanging mirrors. Also in this area is a good sized internal shower and toilet. There is also a doorway that leads to a lovely and unique outside shower... unique as in the shower's effect is that it passes through a bucket... those of us who travel to the bush often, know exactly what a bucket shower is!

The family rooms are simply vast, with two adjoining tents with a lounge area in the middle with sofas etc...

Room Description

Ten luxury safari tents, two of which are family units. These large tents are raised on wooden decks as are the main areas of the lodge. The tents are decorated in a classic safari style incorporating the land and water of the Okavango delta which make up this beautiful land. Luxurious, comfortable, classic.

All eight double tents take two guests and the two family rooms can hold four guests. All rooms have hot and cold running water,  inside and outside showers, flush toilets and twin his and her basins. Electricity in the tents is reserved for lighting and charging of batteries, computers.

Camp Environment

The area is known for its large concentrations of wildlife which thrive on the Gomoti plains and waterways. This exclusive area has been a well-kept secret for many years. The Gomoti region has been the local haunt of many of the older guides and Okavango dwellers who refer to it in nostalgic terms when they used to camp along this river system.

Just 18 km south of Chitabe Camp, Gomoti Plains Camp is waiting to spoil you and your guests with its classical comfort and amazing wildlife. Travel the waterways by motor boat and mekoro and traverse the Gomoti plains enthralling in the dense wildlife concentrations of the Gomoti area.
