Safari Lifestyles View

This is a relatively new lodge at the time of writing. The lodge resides in a fringe area between the main regions of the Chobe RIver stretch of Chobe National Park and is just outside and closer to the main Savute region. As such the lodge explores the Savute region of the park and its environs.

In itself, the lodge sits beautifully on the edge of the impressive Ghoha Hills within its own smallish private concession... no mean feat as hills are quite a rarity in Botswana. We do state that the area is a fringe area in that game can be good but most of the best viewing comes from deeper within the park around the Savuti Marsh areas, which is a good 45 minutes at least game drive to get to. Though it is a very well appointed lodge, because of its distance relative to other lodges in the central area, we have given Ghoha Hills a 3 star rating even though the accommodation is better than that. In fact, if the access to game is not so important to you then this could easily be a 4 star lodge.

This means that whether dining in the guest areas, taking a swim or sitting on the balcony of the luxury tented rooms, you are spoilt with scenery. Ghoha Hills also overlooks a small natural pan that attracts a host of birds and wildlife.

The Savuti Marsh area, approximately10,878 km² large, constitutes the western stretch of the park (50 km north of Mababe Gate). The Savuti Marsh is the relic of a large inland lake whose water supply was cut a long time ago by tectonic movements. Nowadays, the marsh is fed by the erratic Savuti Channel, which dries up for long periods then curiously flows again, a consequence of tectonic activity in the area. It is currently flowing again and in January 2010 reached Savuti Marsh for the first time since 1982. As a result of this variable flow, there are hundreds of dead trees along the channel’s bank. The region is also covered with extensive savannahs and rolling grasslands, which makes wildlife particularly dynamic in this section of the park.
