Classic camp in a very underrated wildlife area

Okavango Delta - DRY Camp
Price Range (2018)
$985 - $1690
One of the real benefits of this camp is its close proximity to Maun. It’s just a short flight that gets you to this dry camp. This is one of Wilderness Safaris’ Classic camps, and does make you feel as though you are there to experience the bush rather than stay in a hotel. It’s a classic tented camp with much attention paid to it with tasteful interiors and good dining.
We think this is a perfect stop over in combination with different style camps; Chitabe would compliment any safari that included a wet camp as here it is drier and private with a record of very good game sightings.

Chitabe Camp is unique even in the Okavango Delta in that it harbours such a variety of habitats within close proximity, ranging from classic Okavango Delta scenery with Illala palms dotting floodplains to open savannah and acacia woodlands. A finger of perennial swamps inundated by water throughout the year extends into the Chitabe Concession and the area is also dominated by seasonally flooded areas which transform 56% of the concession from dry floodplains into a lush oasis, when the annual flood waters meander through. All this gives rise to a surprising diversity of species, which allows Chitabe Camp to offer guests a wide range of luxury african safaris, game viewing and birding experiences.
The high numbers of impala in the area means that leopard are often seen near Chitabe Camp. Also encountered are buffalo, elephant, lion and occasional sightings of wild dog, the subject of the Botswana Wild Dog Research Project that takes place in the area.
The birdlife is excellent and varies throughout the year, depending on water levels and season. Raptors are abundant here: including the African Hawk Eagle and the Hooded Vulture often nests on the island. Game drives in the palm-filled landscape of Chitabe Camp often produce families of Ground Hornbill, Greater Honeyguide, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Red-billed Hornbill, Gabar Goshawk and coveys of Red-billed Francolin.
Chitabe Camp borders the famous Moremi Game Reserve, in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Chitabe Camp has all the scenery you would expect to enjoy on a luxury African safari - open floodplains, waterways, marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodlands, riverine areas and open grasslands.
The wildlife in this area is a breathtaking mix of the Okavango Delta and is as diverse as it is prolific: from elephant to impala and lion to wild dog.
4 guest tents lay on either side of the main lodge, making a total of 8 tents, which sleeps a maximum of 16 people in camp.
The camp in general is decorated in a classic African style making use of wooden flooring and wooden furniture
The central part of camp is made up of a thatched dining area and lounge leading onto open decking, all built on raised decks to provide superb views across a floodplain.
There is a pool that provides cool sanctuary in the heat of the day.
All 8 tents are classic canvas safari style with double sliding doors to each room. Built on raised decking to take advantage of views over the floodplains, each has its own veranda.
All tents have en-suite facilities with the addition of an outside shower. Standing fans in all room help alleviate the strength of the days heat.
Rooms are tastefully and simply decorated with large and comfortable beds with Mosquito netting surrounds..
Chitabe is situated on a beautiful old tree-island in a prime location in the south-east of the Okavango Delta. The 28 000-hectare Chitabe Concession, situated in the south-east of the Okavango Delta, is separated from the well-known Moremi Game Reserve by the Gomoti Channel. This eastern half of the concession is characterised by grassy floodplains, which separate the Channel from acacia and mopane woodland.
The western half of the concession has as its boundary the Santantadibe River and here a variety of typical Okavango habitats – seasonal palm-dotted floodplains, to wooded islands, tranquil waterways and dry woodland – ensure a year-round variety of game viewing and birding experiences. It is this diversity and a mix of Okavango and Kalahari habitats that makes Chitabe unique and which allows good concentrations of all the larger predators – lion, leopard, spotted hyaena, cheetah and wild dog – as well as herbivores like giraffe, buffalo, lechwe, tsessebe, impala and elephant.
